(LOT 206)
1955 Topps #164 Roberto Clemente Rookie PSA 6 EX-MT

EX-MT CLEMENTE!!! After his 1954 campaign with the Montreal Royals of the AAA International League, Clemente joined the Pirates to be their starting right fielder for the 1955 season. Though only posting a .255 batting average in his first year, his flashes of brilliance captivated the Pittsburgh faithful, and his second campaign would see him generate a significantly higher batting average at .311, adding nearly 50 more hits. But it was his incredible skills in the outfield that truly made a mark in the Steel City and on baseball, as he is now widely regarded as the greatest right fielder in MLB history. His 12 straight Gold Gloves remains a record for an outfielder. Clemente's exactly 3,000 hits, lifetime .317 batting average and two World Series titles solidified his enshrinement into Cooperstown. The 1955 Topps #164 Roberto Clemente rookie issue is one of the key rookie issues of the hobby and one of the most desirable. Presented is a PSA 6 EX-MT holder. This remarkably well-preserved gem still carries its original illuminating colors of this dual-image card. Bright and bold, Clemente's likenesses are well-framed, though slightly favoring the bottom edge, with no glaring flaws, and lightly touched corners that have retained a majority of their original right-angled formations.
