(LOT 180)
1909 E90-1 American Caramel Honus Wagner Throwing PSA 2 GOOD

OBSCURE HONUS THROWING POSE!!! Significantly scarcer than the E90-1 American Caramel Wagner Batting subject is its Throwing brethren, with this PSA 2 GOOD 1909 E90-1 rarity one of only 18 PSA encapsulated examples! At the time this was written, PSA had graded 44 of the more common E90-1 Wagner batting subjects, with this ever-elusive Throwing marvel representing a mere 28% of the total E90-1 Wagners. The sudden pricing surge of Wagner's iconic portrait pose issues has spread like wildfire for all of his pre-war subjects. This obscure offering has likewise experienced a substantial value increase over the past year, with an SGC 3 example realizing nearly $19K in May 2023. Indeed, the Flying Dutchman's previously undervalued cards are finally receiving their due recognition. The classic throwing pose utilized on a myriad of Wagner's renowned "E" and candy cards reflects a splendid array of blue, green, yellow, and orange hues, with the momentous central pose eluding any obtrusive flaws. Downgraded due to serious corner layering, stray wrinkles, lower border staining, enamel peel along the lower edge, as well as some scattered areas of soling on the verso, this is clearly a situation whereby the simple right to own a copy supersedes the technical assessment.
