(LOT 105)
1970 Topps #600 Willie Mays PSA 10 GEM MINT

PINNACLE MAYS!!! After suffering through a somewhat injury-plagued 1969 campaign, the Say Hey Kid rebounded in 1970 to put together a stellar season that saw the all-star center fielder smack 28 round-trippers, knock in 83 runs, and post a formidable .291 batting average as well as a superb .506 slugging percentage. As a grand testament to his rebound season, this miraculous 1970 Topps #600 Willie Mays PSA 10 GEM MINT marvel just happens to share the spotlight with a meager four other examples as the best of the best subject on the prestigious PSA Pop chart! Remarkably, of the 3,500+ encapsulated examples, a paltry five copies have been worthy of achieving cardboard grading perfection, with this exhilarating marvel appearing as if it has just been pulled from a 1970 Topps wax pack.

The renowned Topps Chewing Gum Co. chose a classic Mays batting stance for his 1970 #600 subject, with this pristine offering portraying virtually sheer perfection in every conceivable manner. Nearly every attribute substantiates the 10 assessment, including immaculate resolution, vibrant hues, sheen surfaces, and blisteringly sharp corner tips. The only imperfection we can possibly find is the well-positioned image exhibiting the slightest favoritism towards the left edge, with the typical stigma of many 1970 Topps being skewed illustrations. This exalted Cooperstown inductee compiled a staggering 660 home runs, 1,903 RBIs, a .941 OPS and 3,283 hits to the tune of a .302 lifetime batting average. While those figures alone would secure anyone's eternal place in our National Pastime's glorious history, Mays' pinnacle stature stems from his unparalleled ability to play every facet of the game as well or better than any of his peers.

He could hit with power, throw, run and field arguably better than any player who ever graced a baseball diamond, and his absolutely spectacular over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series in the deepest confines of the Polo Grounds will surely echo for eternity. No wonder a myriad of esteemed enthusiasts have taken on the daunting task of assembling all of his high-grade and ultra-rare cards, and it is with our most distinguished honor that we now present one of the finest preserved Mays subjects. Only four other Mays 1970 Topps examples have managed to achieve the pinnacle PSA 10 grade, with this museum-worthy masterpiece proudly standing tall as the finest of its kind!
