c.1910s Chick Gandil Black Sox PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo – Measures Approx. 3-1/8" 4-3/4"

SCARCE GANDIL IMAGE!!!... The White Sox player most responsible for the legendary 1919 "Black Sox" World Series "fix" was their flamboyant first baseman Chick Gandil. Nearing the end of his brilliant career, like many of his teammates, Gandil was totally frustrated by owner Charles Comiskey's penny pinching habits, and was looking for one final chance at hitting the jackpot on a baseball field. This prompted Gandil to meet with a Chicago gambler named Joseph "Sport" Sullivan, with Gandil proclaiming for the right amount of money he could convince a number of his teammates to "throw" the Series against Cincinnati. On September 21st, Gandil summoned seven teammates to his Ansonia Hotel room to propose the idea, and "the fix" was now on! Along with Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver and Ed Cicotte, Chick Gandil remains one of the more prominent "Black Sox" players, justifying why his collectibles are highly coveted by avid enthusiasts.

Presented here is an extremely rare c.1910s Chick Gandil 3-1/8" x 4-3/4" PSA Type 1 Underwood & Underwood photo revealing an enthralling portrait image of the bygone first sacker. Gandil's stoic headshot pose is absolutely mesmerizing, with the crystal-clear White Sox star donning his classic Chicago cap and flannels. While some diminutive scuffing is apparent along his chin, the surface has managed to elude any glaring flaws over the past century, with a typical manual trim to the edges resulting in its current dimensions. The verso exhibits the prestigious Underwood & Underwood violet credit stamp, the final thumbs up for one of the most elusive Type 1 photos extant. Simply stated, original Chick Gandil "Black Sox" illustrations are few and far between, substantiating why this ultra-obscure rendition of the chief 1919 World Series conspirator should find a permanent home in any esteemed "Black Sox" gathering!
