MAGNIFICENT MATTY!!!... This magnificent Christy Mathewson c.1910s photo portrays Matty in a classic "bust" pose as he showcases his period-style New York Giants sweater and cap. Measuring approximately 3" x 5", it certainly resides as one of the most imposing Big Six portrait images we have ever encountered, and while obviously subjected to a typical manual trim (common characteristic of many pre-WWI photos), the absolutely breathtaking central image has remained completely unscathed. Indeed, this timeless marvel can send a shiver down ones' spine via the almost 3D illustration that turns back the clock to an era when the iconic Christy Mathewson was the lord of all early 20th century hurlers. Other than a diminutive lower left corner chip, no obtrusive surface flaws are evident, and this museum worthy masterpiece's final thumbs up is the significant KEYSTONE VIEW CO. caption affixed on the verso.

The immortal Mathewson began his illustrious career in 1900 with the New York Giants after being traded to the New York club from the Cincinnati Reds for star hurler Amos Rusie. In 1901, Matty would post the first of his thirteen 20-win seasons, and from 1903 to 1905, compiling three-consecutive 30+ win seasons. The 1905 campaign would ultimately end with the Giants claiming their first 20th century World's Championship by besting Connie Mack's Athletics in a five-game contest. All Mathewson did was achieve the seemingly impossible task of tossing three complete-game shutouts against the might A's, prompting Mack to boldly claim: "Christy Mathewson is the greatest pitcher I ever saw. It was a pleasure to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you"! The Christian Gentleman was a hero to a seemingly countless number of young aspiring baseball fans, ending his career with an astounding 373 wins and remarkable 2.13 ERA. That said, we cannot imagine a finer testament for the Christian Gentleman's unparalleled legacy than a world-class 1910s image of this legendary right-handed Cooperstown inductee!
