(LOT 197)
1910 T206 Tris Speaker Rookie – "Piedmont 350 Subjects/Factory 25" SGC 7 NM

THE GRAY EAGLE!!!... Presented here is a magnificent SGC 7 NM T206 Tris Speaker Piedmont Cigarettes marvel that joins only five other examples as the highest graded SGC example for ALL advertisement backs! Indeed, of the nearly 750 T206 Speaker's listed on the SGC census report, not a single specimen has managed to surpass the near-mint assessment. One of the most coveted T206 subjects is the 1909 Tris Speaker rookie card that unquestionably resides as his inaugural MLB cardboard issue. Since no 1908 Speaker Rose Postcard has ever been officially confirmed, Speaker's 1909 tobacco gem is the Speaker cardboard issue that enthusiasts consider a must have for their esteemed rookie card compilation. The "Gray Eagle", Speaker's popular nickname, was one of the greatest centerfielder's who ever graced a ball field. Over a 22-year career, primarily with Boston and Cleveland, he accumulated 3,514 hits, including 792 doubles and 222 triples to the tune of a .345 lifetime batting average.

He was famous for playing the shallowest centerfield in major league history, almost daring the hitter to drive the ball over his head, and is credited with the most outfield assists in major league history (449) including a single season record of 35 in 1909! Speaker's classic batting stance is the highlight of this rookie memento that exhibits a sparkling central image, ultra-rich blue background, and four bright white borders. While the image does favor the upper edge, (most likely preventing a higher assessment along with some flipside toning), the excellent side-to-side centering, awe-inspiring Speaker batting pose, near-immaculate obverse side surface, bright white borders, right-angled corners, and bold midnight blue Piedmont 350 Subjects advertisement are the final superlatives for this cardboard masterpiece. In closing, this offering's spectacular robust blue background and crystal-clear Speaker batting pose places this finest SGC example at a superior level, synonymous with Speaker's playing excellence that rightfully earned him a 1939 nod into our National Pastime's illustrious Hall of Fame!
