(LOT 815)
1933 DeLong Gum Co. #7 Lou Gehrig PSA 2.5 Good+

The DeLong Gum Co. of Boston, MA. was one of the first manufacturers to issue baseball cards with bubble gum when they produced their popular 24-card set in 1933. Irrefutably, the immortal Henry Louis Gehrig stands as the foremost subject in this obscure set, presented here in a splendid PSA 2.5 Good+ holder. DeLong cards represent a mere fraction of their 1933 Goudey Gum brethren, with only some 235 PSA-encapsulated DeLong Gehrig examples versus approximately 2,500 Goudey Gehrig's issued in 1933. That equates to the DeLong Gehrig count standing at less than 10% of his total PSA graded '33 Goudeys, an incredible disproportion not yet reflected in their comparative pricing.

Entering the 1933 season, the Iron Horse was in the prime of his remarkable career and did not disappoint his ardent fans. The uncontested "king" of the DeLong set, the '33 campaign would see Gehrig post another array of incredible batting achievements, including a formidable .334 average, 32 homers, 140 RBIs, and sensational 1.030 OPS! His classic batting pose, unique for and cardboard issue, reveals a sparkling array of colored tints, and vivid resolution as Lou pulverizes another pitch towards the grandstands. The iconic image is set against the famous DeLong stadium backdrop that includes sparkling yellow, green, red and blue hues, and atypical for any DeLong subject, the illustration is extremely well centered between four somewhat clean borders.

Accounting for the grade is standard corner wear (including some modest layering along the two lower corners), and a diminutive area of surface wear situated in the upper right quadrant. With several PSA 3 VG examples fetching $14,400 and $13,200 in August and January 2022, respectively, it appears the previously undervalued DeLong Gehrig subject is beginning to receive the attention it truly deserves. That said, you would be wise to capture this stellar PSA 2.5 offering before its value, synonymous to the path of a majestic Iron Horse round-tripper, soars to unprecedented heights!
