(LOT 107)
1934 Goudey #23 Charley Gehringer PSA 9 MINT

MECHANICAL MAN!!! One of the most desirable baseball card sets is the 1934 Goudey Gum issue, and one of its highly coveted subjects is the popular Tiger's Hall of Fame 2nd baseman Charley Gehringer, presented here in a miraculous PSA 9 MINT holder. At the time this was written, PSA's prestigious Pop Chart had only listed a meager four examples at this exalted plateau, with NONE graded higher! Indeed, this best of the best offering proudly stands alongside four other specimens as the finest of its kind! Charley Gehringer resides as one of our National Pastime's greatest all-time 2nd sackers, accumulating formidable statistics such as a .320 lifetime batting average and seven different seasons in which he stroked over 200 hits and knocked in over 100 runs. His .371 batting average in 1937 earned him the MVP award and he led the Detroit Tigers to three pennants.

His scintillating appearance on what may be his most sought-after cardboard collectible, this 1934 Goudey Gum card, likewise depicts solid championship caliber. The Cooperstown Inductee's stoic image is basically pristine, depicting a splendid array of gray, white and facial hues that are set against a flawless orange/red background. The classic illustration is extremely well-centered between four bright white borders, only reflecting an ever-so-slight partiality towards the upper edge. The verso's bold green typography is affixed to a super clean surface, with both sides eluding any noticeable flaws. It literally seems impossible that an 88-year-old card could retain nearly all of its original pack-fresh attributes, yet courtesy of our esteemed consignor as well as any of its previous owners, this world-class gem proudly boasts the PSA 9 pinnacle grade. Simply stated, we cannot imagine any of the other four PSA 9 examples possibly matching up to this absolutely mesmerizing Gehringer memento!.
