(LOT 86)
1952 Topps #217 Signed George "Snuffy" Stirnweiss PSA 5 EX Card Grade; PSA AUTH Auto - POP 1; Highest Graded Example!

Deceased: 1958; Grade Pop: 1; Pop Higher: 0; Total Pop: 3
This "Pop 1" highest graded marvel represents one of the earliest deceased players from the illustrious 1952 Topps gathering. Second-sacker George "Snuffy" Stirnweiss retired after the 1952 campaign, with the two-time Yankees All-Star claiming three World Series titles in New York as well as an A.L. batting championship in 1945. Sadly, Stirnweiss was killed in one of the worst train wrecks in U.S. history on September 15, 1958 when riding the New Jersey Central Railroad to Manhattan (Train #3314), the train inadvertently roared through signals and catapulted off of the open Newark Bay lift bridge directly into the bay. Stirnweiss and 47 other passengers were tragically killed, with Stirnweiss's sudden passing at the tender age of 39 ultimately resulting in only three examples of his 1952 Topps subject being scripted by this bygone star.
