(LOT 887)
"Rare for the Grade" 1958 Topps #433 Pancho Herrar Error (Herrara) – Rookie Card - PSA 8 NM-MT – "POP 4"; Only a SOLE PSA Example Graded Higher!

One of the post-WWII cardboard rarities is the seldom offered 1958 Topps #433 Pancho Herrara rookie card subject with a majority of the last "a" missing from his surname. Presented here is an absolutely stunning 1958 Topps #433 "Herrar" error variation that along with a meager three other examples has only been bested by a sole PSA 9 copy! Its scarcity is substantiated by PSA's population report that lists only 66 graded specimens for the error version (at the time this was written). Its lineage can most likely be attributed to the factory's printing press ink running dry, whereby most of the "a" did not transfer to the card's surface. A few of these errors made their way into packs before a technician must have realized there was an ink issue eliminating a majority of the "a" in "Herrara's" name.

The 1958 campaign would be Pancho Herrara's inaugural campaign, prompting the Topps Company to issue his #433 rookie subject, with the slick-fielding first baseman only playing three MLB seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. A stout individual, the Cuban-born slugger was 6' 3", 220 lbs., and before his MLB tenure, he played with the legendary Kansas City Monarchs. Most significantly, his MLB legacy will forever stand tall via this extremely momentous PSA 8 "Herrar" error card, with its brilliant aesthetics highlighted by a classic half-body stoic pose and awe-inspiring baby-blue background. Bright white borders, relatively clean surfaces, no glaring surface flaws and sharp corners are the final compliments for this time-defying rarity. Indeed, similar to the T206 "Magie" error card that has achieved earth-shattering fame comes along this PSA 8 "Herrar" missing "a" variation that has only been bested by a single example!
