(LOT 162)
1933 Goudey #158 Moe Berg PSA 8 NM-MT - Only 3 PSA Examples Graded Higher!

MOE BERG MARVEL!!! One of the most intriguing all-time baseball players is catcher Moe Berg who played 15 seasons with the Robins, White Sox, Indians, Senators and Red Sox. A fine defensive catcher, the light-hitting Berg only mustered a .243 lifetime batting average, but it was certainly not his statistics that place his vintage cards as one of the hobby's most sought-after collectibles. Born of Jewish descent in Belleville, N.J., the popular Moe Berg may have been the most scholastic baseball player ever, having graduated from both Princeton University and Columbia Law School. He was a lawyer, mathematician and could speak 12 languages. Unfortunately, he couldn't "hit a lick", prompting the statement: "he can speak 12 languages but can't hit in any one of them!" Regardless, he was a prestigious individual, and after his MLB career, was used as an atomic spy in WWII, obtaining critical information on various German scientists. His most sought-after baseball card is his 1933 Goudey #158 subject, presented here in a remarkable PSA 8 NM-MT holder and only bested by a mere three examples on the illustrious PSA population report.

Indeed, no "common" in the landmark 1933 Goudey bubble gum set is more coveted than the Moe Berg subject that portrays this historically significant individual in a classic catcher's squatting stance. The timeless image depicts the bygone Berg donning his Washington flannels, with Moe's classic pose flanked by a tranquil sage green background. The finest imaginable crystal clear clarity and sparkling hues are some of the pinnacle highlights of this museum worthy masterpiece that has stubbornly defied father-time. The most impressive attribute, however, is the virtually dead-on 50/50 centering that is near-impossible to find on any Goudey subject. Also consistent with the grade are the pinpoint corners, snow white borders, fine edging and near-immaculate surfaces that have eluded any eye-catching flaws over the past 89 years. This outstanding Moe Berg offering truly turns back the clock to the year when Berg was the back-up catcher for the American League pennant winning Washington Senators and roughly a decade before he would work for the U.S. government during WWII as an Atomic spy.
