(LOT 793)
1954 Stahl-Meyer Franks Willie Mays SGC 1 Poor

Presented here is a seldom-surfacing 1954 Stahl-Meyer Willie Mays rarity in an SGC 1 Poor holder. Substantiating the ultra-condition sensitivity of any 1954 Stahl-Meyer subject is SGC's Census Report listing 76% of the total encapsulated '54 Stahl-Meyer subjects with "Authentic" to "2 Good" assessments. Regarding the Willie Mays subject, only two of the ten SGC encapsulated copies reveal a higher assessment than "2 Good"! Simply stated, high-grade Stahl-Meyer Franks subjects virtually never surface with these ultra-scarce 1950's baseball cards distributed in packages of hot dogs by a New York based meat-company from 1953 thru 1955 (the scarcer 1954 & 1955 issues include yellow borders as opposed to the 1953 issues that reflect white borders).

The 1953 set includes 9 subjects while the 1954/"55 sets were increased to 12 players. As is the case with almost all post WWII cardboard issues, the two most popular and valuable players in the set are the iconic NY center fielders Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. While the offered Mays subject does portray several small areas of paper loss on his cap and jersey, some scattered wrinkles, and a small written notation directly above the "A" and "N" on his Giants jersey, his classic portrait image has eluded the serious soiling that typically plagues this issue. One of the finer "1s" you will ever come across, its vibrant hues, strong perimeter and relatively clean verso all combine to merit it a final resting place in any advanced "Say Hey Kid" gathering!
