(LOT 336)
Lot of Two "Unique" 1933 Goudey #83 Signed "POP 1" Subjects – One Signed "Pete Jablonowski" (UNCLE JIMMY COLLECTION; PSA 5 EX/AUTO 7); One Signed "Pete Appleton (PSA AUTHENTIC) – The Only Two #83 Jablonowski Subjects on the PSA "POP" Chart!

Journeyman right-handed twirler Pete Jablonowski pitched for eight teams in his 14 MLB seasons. In early 1934, Jablonowski decided to legally change his surname to "Appleton", with this world-class pianist stating "Jablonowski" was too much of a tongue twister if he decided to pursue a musical career after baseball. Three other possible reasons for utilizing a different name included: (1) to change his luck; (2) after marrying Aldora Leszcynski, he couldn't think of the prospect of his wife going through the rest of her life being called Aldora Lescynnski Jablonowski; or (3) Jablonowski succumbing to the racial tension and ridicule of his Polish descent surname in an era when bigotry was unfortunately widely accepted across the globe.

While the main driver of this name change may never achieve full resolution, presented here just happens to be two of his signed 1933 Goudey #83 Pete Jablonowski subjects, one scripted "Pete Jablonowski" (PSA 5 EX/AUTO 7) and the other penned "Pete Appleton!" Remarkable as it may seem, PSA's "Pop" Chart reveals that each unique card is a definitive "POP 1", the only two autographed #83 Jablonowski subjects extant, and a scripted dynamic duo that resides as a "must have" for any advanced autographed Goudey collector!
