(LOT 275)
EXTREMELY RARE 1933 Goudey #57 Signed Earl Clark (Beckett AUTHENTIC) - One of Only 2 Known Specimens Extant! – Includes a JSA/James Spence LOA

One of the rarest of all autographed 1933 Goudey cards belongs to bygone Red Sox outfielder Earl Clark who tragically died in a Washington D.C. car crash at the tender age of 30 on January 16, 1938. In fact, Clark was officially the first of all Goudey subjects to pass away, with his untimely death leaving only two know scripted Goudey heirlooms. One of those is presented here in a Beckett Authentic holder (the other known example is PSA Authentic), with the black ink signature well preserved via a clear strip of tape that a prior collector placed over the hallowed signature. The verso reveals a pencil notation near the top edge that reads: "Tommys Ball Card!!!", and we can only assume Tommy was a prior owner of this extreme scarcity. While Earl Clark posted a formidable .291 batting average in 8 MLB seasons, after his retirement with the St. Louis Browns on May 25, 1934, he would sadly live less than four more years, with his legacy secured forever via this near-impossible to find Goudey keepsake!
