(LOT 60)
1952 Topps #80 Herman Wehmeier "Red Back" PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ - "POP 2"; Highest Graded PSA Example!

One of the highly coveted high-grade commons in the iconic 1952 Topps set is right-handed twirler Herman Wehmeier's #80 Red Back subject, presented here in a PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ holder. Joining only a single other example at this hallowed plateau, it shares the spotlight as the finest 1952 Topps #80 subject of its kind! Indeed, of the 500+ encapsulated copies, not a single "9" or "10" Wehmeier '52 Topps specimen exists on the PSA "Pop" Chart, with this "8.5" marvel proudly standing tall as the finest example. Wehmeier pitched 13 years in the major leagues with four different clubs, winning 92 games and debuting as an 18-year-old rookie for his hometown Cincinnati Reds in 1945. His magnificent Topps portrait image emanates sparkling hues, extremely bold orange/yellow background colors, a "3-D" like Reds' cap that seemingly jumps off the card, and near-perfect centering between four snow white borders. Razor-sharp corner tips, impeccable surfaces and the lack of any noticeable flaws all combine to place this supreme offering as one of the most significant 1952 Topps cards for any esteemed PSA Set Registered compilation!
