(LOT 38)
1928 Harrington's Ice Cream #26 Lou Gehrig (PSA 5 EX) - "Pop 3"; Only 3 PSA Examples Graded Higher!

In 1928, a number of popular ice cream companies issued baseball cards with their brand products including Yuengling's, Tharp and Harrington's. Designated as F50s, the cards in this obscure 60-card set measure approximately 1-3/8" x 2-1/2" and are strikingly similar to the 1927 York Caramels and 1928 W502 issues. The two most coveted subjects are Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, with the beloved "Iron Horse" Harrington's memento offered here in a stellar PSA 5 EX holder. One of only three examples at this mid-grade plateau, a paltry three specimens have been graded higher! Issued at a time when Gehrig and Ruth were wreaking havoc on their opposing pitchers to the tune of being dubbed the greatest "dynamic batting duo" in baseball history, it stands as one of the few Gehrig conventional sized cards issued during the 1920s.

Indeed, excluding a handful of oversized exhibit/postcard issues, this grand offering suffices as one of Gehrig's earliest baseball cards. Lou's stoic portrait black & white image depicts fine resolution while revealing near-perfect vertical centering, and a partial favoritism towards the lower edge. Accounting for the grade is even corner wear that fortunately exhibits an eye pleasing uniformity. No glaring surface flaws are evident and the final exclamation point is the flipside's Harrington's Ice Cream redemption advertisement, with the capability of trading in all 60 subjects for a gallon of Harrington's ice cream. Henry Louis Gehrig truly stands as the finest 1st baseman of all-time, and synonymous with his premier diamond stature is this super eclectic keepsake that has eluded many "Iron Horse" collections!
