(LOT 27)
1980 Topps J.Van Breda Kolff, J.Erving, M.Johnson PSA 10 GEM MINT

Several of the 1980 Topps basketball issues included rookie cards of the great NBA Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson who easily resides as one of the top ten all-time basketball players. Presented here is one of those extremely coveted 1980 Topps issues, a world-class PSA 10 Gem Mint rookie card offering of the immortal Magic Johnson who shares the card with J. Van Breda Kolff and likewise basketball great Julius Erving. One of only twenty examples achieving the pinnacle "10" assessment, a mere 1% of the 1,900 PSA encapsulated specimens have been fortunate enough to earn the perfect Gem Mint grade. Issued in 1979, the Los Angeles Lakers had just made Magic the number one pick in the draft, capturing the atypical 6'9" point guard from Michigan State directly after he led his team to an NCAA championship over Larry Bird's Indiana State squad. It didn't take Johnson long to showcase his ball handling skills and leadership at an NBA level, for he followed up his NCAA title by immediately spearheading the Lakers to a 1980 World Championship. In 13 seasons, Johnson claimed five NBA titles, three League MVP's, 12 All-Star nods, and ended his career with outstanding statistics including a 19.5 scoring average, 11.2 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game, with all three figures substantiating his incredible versatility. The card has earned the hallowed "10" grade via its immaculate surfaces, vibrant image hues, excellent centering, blinding white borders and razor-sharp perimeter that includes four pinpoint corners. A true "blazer", it transcends time some 32 years ago when Earvin Johnson was embarking on one of the greatest careers in NBA history, with its esteemed hobby stature justified by another PSA 10 recently fetching $27K in December 2021!
