(LOT 11)
1916 M101-5 #28 Frank Chance Blank Back (SGC 4 VG-EX) - "Pop 2"; Only 2 SGC Examples Graded Higher!

One of the toughest Hall of Famers in the ultra-popular M101-5 Blank Back Set is the #28 subject representing Frank Chance, with SGC listing only six copies on their Census Report (PSA has only graded five examples). This is due to Chance only being included in the M101-5 issue, with his checklist number replaced by #28 Max Carey in the subsequent M101-4 series. This super eye pleasing SGC 4 VG-EX offering is one of only two specimens at the desirable mid-grade plateau, and only a paltry two examples have been graded higher. Hall of Fame first sacker Frank Chance was the peerless leader of the Chicago Cubs, managing them to two consecutive championships in 1907 and 1908, while also being the final link to the legendary "Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance" double-play combination. Chance's quick exodus from the M101-5 set was obviously due to his player/manager career ending in 1914 with the New York Yankees. Strangely enough, his short-lived #28 checklist appearance in early 1916 portrays Chance in his classic Cubs uniform (as opposed to the Yankees), with his last season in Chicago being four years earlier (1912). One of the more formidable M101-5 Cooperstown Inductees, Chance's paucity level cannot be understated, with this ultra-scarce SGC 4 keepsake meriting serious hobby accolades!
