(LOT 10)
1916 M101-5 #23 Mordecai Brown Blank Back (SGC 2 Good) - "Only 6 SGC Graded Examples"!

The significance of a 1916 M101-5 Mordecai Brown card cannot be understated, regardless of its technical assessment. The #23 subject in the set, it was the replacement card for the #23 Forrest Cady "Short-Print" that was replaced by Brown early during its distribution. Justifying its scarcity is the SGC "Pop" Chart that lists only six Mordecai Brown examples, ironically matching the six specimens listed for the assumed rarer Forrest Cady #23 subject. Due to a farm accident, two of Brown's fingers were damaged on his right hand, eventually leading to the right hander's iconic "Three Finger" nickname and incredible Hall of Fame career. Unforeseen was the incredible movement Brown's deformed fingers would generate on his pitches, ultimately resulting in Mordecai achieving the third lowest lifetime E.R.A. with a microscopic 2.06 figure. His majestic pose is the perfect testament to his legacy as Brown depicts his Hall of Fame pitching motion. General corner and surface wear account for the grade, none of which detract from Brown's imposing central image. Seldom surfacing to say the least, this "Three Finger" Brown obscurity would make a splendid addition to any serious M101-5 gathering!
