(LOT 8)
1916 M101-5 #90 Walter Johnson Blank Back SGC 3 VG – "Pop 2"

One of the most prestigious members of the 1916 M101-5 set is the iconic Hall of Fame charter member Walter Johnson, and it is his superb "blank back" subject offered here in an SGC 3 VG holder. Only a single other example is listed at the VG plateau on the SGC census report. Walter Johnson's accomplishments are virtually insurmountable, explaining why most baseball experts nominate him as the greatest pitcher who ever toed the rubber. 417 lifetime wins, 3,508 strikeouts, a lifetime 2.17 ERA, and an incredible 110 shutouts (including 38 1-0 wins!) certainly substantiate this notion. Most significantly, he succeeded the great Christy Mathewson as the game's consummate professional, idolized by a myriad of aspiring young ballplayers. A crystal clear "hands over head" black & white pitching image of Johnson graces the front side, set against a stadium backdrop as Johnson prepares to unleash another blazing fastball. Presenting solid mid-grade aesthetics, only a few faint wrinkles and surface wear (including four somewhat soft corners) account for the grade, with this highly coveted offering managing to elude any glaring flaws over the past 105 years. Indeed, this is certainly the time to ride this somewhat elusive "Big Train" marvel directly to the winner's circle!
