(LOT 7)
1916 M101-5 #184 Honus Wagner Blank Back SGC 4.5 VG-EX+ "Pop 1"; Only 2 Graded Higher!

When the Chicago based Felix Mendelsohn publishing company issued their landmark 200-card set in 1916, there was no doubt they would include the immortal "Hans" Wagner as one of their subjects. Nearing the end of a remarkable 21-year career that would see the "Flying Dutchman" accumulate 3,420 hits to the tune of a .328 lifetime average and a record eight N.L. Batting Titles, Wagner would only post a .287 average for the 1916 campaign. Indeed, the greatest all-time shortstop's stellar playing days were clearly winding down, but fortunately for this 1936 Hall of Fame Charter Member, his distinguished place in our National Pastime's glorious history had already been established. Along with his likewise scarce 1916 Fleischmann Bakery issue, Wagner's 1916 M101-5 #184 subject stands as his final baseball card issued during his playing days, and this "fresh to the hobby" SGC 4.5 offering marks the end of his remarkable career.

The sole specimen at this popular mid-grade plateau, only two SGC examples have been graded higher. The millions of collectors that cannot afford Honus Wagner's hallowed T206 "Holy Grail" continue to speculate on which pre-WWI Wagner card may be the next one to soar in value, and this offering just might be one of the hobby's best kept secrets. Wagner's magnificent black & white batting emulates world-class aesthetics, with his classic batting pose partly favoring the left edge. Modest corner wear consistent with the grade and some general surface toning are the only flaws worthy of mention, and it is clear that both sides have managed to elude any obtrusive blemishes. One of the finest SGC graded M101-5 Wagner's extant, its "Pop 1" stature speaks for itself, and we highly recommend capturing it before its current undervalued pricing points soar to unprecedented heights!
