(LOT 1714)
1927 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig & Father Flanagan PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo Measures Approx. 7" x 9-1/2"

This magnificent PSA Type 1 offering portrays the iconic "dynamic duo" Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig flanking the legendary Father Flanagan during their most exalted 1927 campaign. This was the year that the "Babe" and "Iron Horse" would lead the seemingly unbeatable Yankees to their first world championship since 1923. Led by the Bambino's record-setting 60 home runs and Gehrig's MVP season in which the immortal 1st sacker also slugged 47 round-trippers of his own, the Yankees literally "caked-walked" to their second World Series title.

Just as impressive during that era was the benevolent work of the likewise renowned Father Edward J. Flanagan, who received his fame as being the founder of the momentous orphanage known as "Boys Town". A Catholic priest from Omaha, Nebraska, Father Flanagan's iconic Boys Town educational complex was situated in Douglas County, Nebraska, and became a haven to a seemingly countless number of deprived or abandoned children who worshiped this truly remarkable priest. Indeed, when you consider how both Ruth and Gehrig were also adored by their youthful fan base, it comes as little surprise that these three iconic heroes were literally overwhelmed by a large crowd of young aspiring boys in this extremely rare photo.

Further enhancing its highly coveted stature is the fact that it was taken during the year the Yankees would capture the hearts of their aspiring fans, with the sparkling 7" x 9-1/2" image somehow managing to elude any serious surface flaws for the past 94 years. Its world-class highlights include superior contrast and crystal-clear clarity, and the verso reveals several Underwood & Underwood credit stamps as well as a caption that has unfortunately been compromised by possible scrapbook removal. A most significant image depicting three of America's most popular personalities during that bygone era, it conjures up memories of how Ruth, Gehrig and the devoted Father Flanagan had an unparalleled "soft-spot" for underprivileged boys who required their love and devotion as a stabilizing crutch for their uncertain futures!
