Extremely Rare c.1920s Lou Gehrig & Ty Cobb PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Photo - Measures Approx. 6-3/4" x 8"
This amazing photo depicts the legendary Ty Cobb diving safely back to first base ahead of the tag from none other than the Yankees immortal 1st sacker Henry Louis Gehrig! Based on the photo's flip side notation, it appears that Yankees right-hander "Sad" Sam Jones is the pitcher attempting to hold Cobb close at first base, with the pencil inscription reading as follows: "Ty Cobb sliding safely back to first base as Jones attempts to catch him napping." Since Jones pitched for the Yankees from 1922 thru 1926, it would make perfect sense that this image was taken from a Detroit vs. New York game in either 1925 or 1926, especially considering that Gehrig only had a handful of at-bats during the 1923 and 1924 campaigns.

Previously, we had only seen one other in-action game photo depicting both Cobb and Gehrig. As the "Georgia Peach's" remarkable career was winding down in the mid-1920s, the young and powerful Gehrig was embarking on a career that would arguably place the "Iron Horse" as one of our National Pastime's greatest all-time hitters. Measuring approximately 6-3/4" x 8", several stray creases do not distract from the image's near-perfect contrast and fine resolution, literally bringing to life these two baseball icons. A truly extraordinary offering, it captures two of baseballs arguable top five players in a single action pose, with the aging Cobb only a few years away from ending an unfathomable 24-year career, and Gehrig about to unleash his unparalleled slugging exploits!
