(LOT 1690)
1916 World Series Game #2 Image with Babe Ruth Backing up 3rd Base PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Bain Photo Measures Approx. 4" x 5"

The 1916 World Series would pit the Boston Red Sox against the Brooklyn Robins. Having claimed their 3rd World Championship the prior year against the Phillies, the BoSox would once again claim the title, besting Brooklyn four games to one. Playing their home games at Braves Field, the immortal Babe Ruth would pitch Game #2 in Boston. After giving up a run in the first inning, Ruth would go on to twirl 13 consecutive shutout innings and claim his inaugural World Series win as the Red Sox won a tightly fought 14-inning contest 2-1. Interestingly enough, that would be the start of the "Babe's" 29-2/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak in the World Series, a record that lasted some 44 years until Whitey Ford eclipsed it in the 1962 Fall Classic against San Francisco (33-2/3 scoreless innings).

Presented here just happens to be an extremely rare 4" x 5" PSA Type 1 George Grantham Bain photo from that historic Game #2 contest that just happens to portray the legendary Babe Ruth! Brooklyn's pitcher Sherry Smith is being tagged out at 3rd base, and most significantly, Babe Ruth is also included in the image as he "backs up" 3rd base. Smith had actually stroked a double off Ruth in the second inning; one of only six hits the Robins would muster in 14 innings. Taken on October 9, 1916 at Braves Field, in the background grandstands you can view some of the 47,373 patrons that stormed the gates to see the iconic Ruth toe the rubber. In typical Bain fashion, there is a white text on the obverse side (in this case along the lower border) that reads: "SMITH OUT AT 2d IN 2d INNING 10/9/16". Of course, Smith was out at 3rd base (not 2nd), and both the image and verso's violent ink stamp that reads "SMITH OUT ON THIRD" clearly substantiating that notion.

A few stray wrinkles and some areas of faint soiling do not impede this amazing photo that just happens to include the incomparable Ruth running towards third base (from the pitching mound) to back up the play, demonstrating sound baseball protocol. An absolutely extraordinary find, we cannot recall any 1916 World Series Type 1 in action" image clearly including Babe Ruth, who in his second season with Boston tallied a sensational 23 wins and microscopic 1.75 E.R.A. To reiterate, after the Robins scored a first inning run, the Bambino would literally turn Brooklyn's bats into sawdust, tossing 13 consecutive shutout innings to claim his first World Series victory while also jump-starting his magnificent feat of twirling 29-2/3 successive scoreless innings!
