(LOT 1681)
Spectacular c.1910's Walter Johnson "Hands on Hips" PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Phototone Co. Photo Measures 8" x 10" (Incl. PSA Type 1 LOA)

Most historians agree that Walter Johnson resides as baseball's greatest all-time pitcher. The "Big Train" racked up a staggering 417 wins and 113 career shutouts to support that claim, with the "Weiser Wonder" beginning his MLB career in 1907 with the Washington Senators. By the time the first decade of the 20th century elapsed, Johnson had clearly etched his name among the game's finest pitchers via his blazing side-winding fastball that was virtually unhittable. From 1907 thru 1909, he produced microscopic E.R.A.s of 1.88, 1.65 and 2.22, tallying his first 25-win season in 1910. Presented here is a magnificent PSA Type 1 c.1910s Walter Johnson photo portraying the iconic twirler in a classic full body "hands on hips" pose as he showcases his period style Senators' flannels. Measuring approximately 8" x 10" the well-centered glossy image has remarkably eluded any glaring flaws, revealing an outstanding combination of fine contrast and crystal-clear clarity.

The "Big Train" provides the camera with a stoic facial expression, with the flame-throwing right-hander compiling some unfathomable numbers for the 1910s. Those figures included a staggering 265 victories via 20+ wins every campaign (an average of 26.5 wins per season) leading the Junior Circuit in strikeouts nine times (all but one season), and miraculously posting a sub-2.00 E.R.A. nine of the ten seasons to the tune of a microscopic 1.59 E.R.A. from 1910-1919. The only noteworthy flaws include some wrinkles near the upper left corner and a miniscule hole (barely visible to the naked eye) that eliminates the "R" in the "COPY IGHT BY PHOTOTONE CO." raised caption (in the lower left quadrant). The final attribute is the verso's PHOTOTONE CO. credit stamp, with this "ultra-scarce" Walter Johnson memento clearly standing as one of his finest images extant, and the perfect testament to his unparalleled legacy!
