(LOT 73)
1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinets #501 Chief Bender SGC 1.5 FR

In 1911, Chief Bender led the American League with a .773 winning percentage posting as 17-5 record. He also led the Philadelphia Athletics to their second consecutive World Series title. That same year, the Pinkerton Tobacco Company released the popular T5 cabinet set. Unlike many tobacco issues, Pinkerton offered cabinet cards through a coupon redemption program in which ten coupons could be exchanged for any player including Cobb, Mathewson, Wagner, Baker, W. Johnson or Cy Young. The players "real" photo measures 3-3/8" x 5-1/2" and is affixed to a heavy, embossed 4-3/4" x 7-3/4" cardboard mount. Presented is the Pinkerton featuring Charles Albert "Chief" Bender #501 graded SGC 1.5 FAIR. Pasted to the grey mount, this example shows minimal surface wear on the front save for light handling wear at the upper left. The borders are strong and clean with slight corner paper loss at upper left. The reverse has a significant smudge and watermark in the upper quadrant, but unobtrusive given the blank back. Encased in an SGC 1.5 FAIR holder.
