"Ty" Cobb 1911 (M110) Sporting Life Cabinet (SGC VG/EX 4) – "1 of 3 SGC Examples"; Only 1 Graded Higher on the Combined SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts!

Regarding presentation, there are a handful of vintage baseball cards/cabinets that exhibit unique and/or fascinating art in their player designs, providing additional motivation for the serious enthusiast to venture in owning these artistic rarities. With that in mind, along with the popular 1911 Turkey Red issue, no baseball card could ever surpass the brilliant artistic designs and color patterns of the ultra-obscure 1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet premiums issued by the Sporting Life News Dealer Co. These pastel-hued rarities including only 6 subjects and, arguably speaking, might even surpass the aesthetic brilliance of the contemporary T3 Turkey Red Cabinets. Seldom surfacing in the hobby, their obscurity is virtually unparalleled, and just might qualify as the most attractive and exquisite cards ever produced in our treasured hobby.

As is the case with nearly all pre-WW1 issues, the most valuable and desirable player in this six-subject set is the immortal Hall of Famer Tyrus Raymond Cobb, and it is his absolutely breathtaking M110 Sporting Life Cabinet that is presented here in an SGC VG/EX 4 holder. Currently SGC has only encapsulated 13 of these extraordinary Cobb specimens, listing only a meager 2 other VG/EX examples and a sole SGC EX 5 copy graded higher! Furthermore, if you thought that capturing a fine Ty Cobb Turkey Red specimen was a tough task, consider that the combined PSA and SGC Ty Cobb Turkey Red count currently exceeds 230, while the combined population for the M110 Sporting Life Cobb resides at 26 copies or a mere 11% of the T3 total. Indeed, not only does this exquisite Sporting Life Cobb reflect his most astonishing image, its paucity level is "light years" ahead of its Turkey Red peer. Ty Cobb's legacy cannot be over-emphasized. He is a 1936 charter member of baseball's Hall of Fame and the distinguished owner of baseball's highest lifetime batting average (.366), ably assisted by his 4,189 hits and 12 A.L. batting titles!

Undeniably, from a baseball card collecting perspective, he ranks right alongside Ruth, Joe Jackson, Wagner and Gehrig as the most highly sought-after pre-war player, with his highly coveted cardboard gems continuing to soar in value. The picturesque Cobb batting stance is omnipresent in nature, emanating a brilliant array of gray, green and brown pastel hues as Cobb triggers his "hallowed" lumber to smack another one of his legendary safeties. Framing this unequivocal image are borders similar to those utilized for T3's, and considering there no obtrusive surface flaws, we can only assume the technical assessment is due to modest/even corner wear that includes some negligible color loss at the upper left and lower right corners' utmost tips. The "TY COBB" name printed below his captivating image is flawless, and the spectacular bold blue Sporting News flipside advertisement is super clean. We cannot overemphasize the seemingly unprecedented aesthetics this ultra-obscure Ty Cobb cabinet emanates, obviously consistent with the super rare SGC mid-grade. A world-class offering to say the least, its imposing "Georgia Peach" batting image and striking pastel tints are synonymous with Cobb's unparalleled diamond prowess that dominated our National Pastime for nearly three decades!
