(LOT 112)
1911 T205 Gold Border Ty Cobb – Piedmont Cigarettes (PSA 4.5 VG-EX+)

The artistically ornate 1911 T205 Gold Border cards are among the most widely sought-after subjects due to their regal gold borders, flamboyant hues and elaborate baseball diamond designs. Unfortunately, their ultra-condition sensitive gold borders that were highly susceptible to flaking/chipping make it an excruciating task to find even mid-grade examples. Save the famous "Hoblitzell error card", the set's most desirable subject is the fiery Tiger's Hall of Fame outfielder Tyrus Raymond Cobb, and it is his superb T205 Piedmont Cigarettes specimen offered here in a PSA VG/EX+ 4.5 holder. The "Georgia Peach" is one of baseball's five Hall of Fame 1936 charter members, and one of our National Pastime's greatest "5 tool" players. Justifying that notion is his .366 lifetime batting average and unprecedented 12 A.L. batting titles, both still standing records that may outlast eternity!

Regarding this T205 marvel, it is an excruciating task to ascertain specimens carrying aesthetically pleasing gold borders, justifying why this spectacular Cobb memento is highly coveted by the collecting community. Cobb's hallowed T205 portrait image is brilliant, to say the least, with its sparkling facial tints and fine clarity set against a robust red/green shaped baseball diamond that reveals no glaring surface flaws. Most significantly, the atypical well-centered image resides between four borders that incredibly depict minimal surface chipping, with some color loss situated near the lower right corner and some microscopic-like chipping evident along top edge. The relatively clean "Piedmont Cigarettes" ad back is the final "thumbs up" for one of Ty Cobb's most exalted T205 masterpieces that seldom surfaces for the taking in such an aesthetically pleasing mid-grade state!
