(LOT 90)
Christy Mathewson 1910 Novelty Cutlery PSA 4.5 VG-EX+

The 1910 campaign would once again see the immortal Christy Mathewson dominate N.L. hitters, with the Hall of Fame right-hand twirler notching 27 wins and a spectacular 1.89 E.R.A. It would be Matty's eight consecutive 20+ win season, on the way to an unfathomable 12 consecutive campaigns in which the Giant's ace hurler would post 20 or more victories. That would also be the season the Canton, OH. Based Novelty Cutlery Knife Co. would issue their ultra-popular 26-subject Novelty Cutlery postcard set including the incomparable "Christian Gentleman". Offered here is an outstanding PSA VG/EX+ 4.5 Mathewson Novelty postcard, the sole PSA example at this ultra-desirable mid-grade plateau with only a single example graded higher! One of five 1936 Hall of Fame charter members, Matty tallied an incredible 373 lifetime wins and 2.13 E.R.A., while miraculously posting four 30+ winning seasons.

Yet, he will always be best remembered for his unparalleled 3 complete-game shutouts in the 1905 World Series when he mowed down the powerful Philadelphia Athletics. This prompted iconic A's manager Connie Mack to quote: "Mathewson was the greatest pitcher that ever lived. It was wonderful to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you". Virtually synonymous with Mack's legendary quote is this card's sheer existence, with the classic Matty pitching pose "stealing the show", and also utilized on his PC796, Max Stein, and E300 Plow Boy issues. No glaring surface blemishes are evident on either side, and the corners reveal an eye pleasing even wear. If you are gathering Mathewson's rarest "turn of the century" keepsakes, you will be highly challenged locating a finer "Big Six" offering, effectively reminding us of how Matty ruled the pitching rubber for a majority of his remarkable career!
