(LOT 72)
1908-09 E102 Ty Cobb PSA 6 EX-MT - "1 of 2"; Highest Graded Example!

The 1908/1909 E102 Anonymous Ty Cobb is still considered by many card purists as Cobb's "conventional sized" rookie card, with many enthusiasts firmly believing its original distribution year was 1908. While several Cobb postcards and his W600 Sporting Life Cabinet were issued in 1907, a number of collecting purists forgo the notion that larger sized cardboard artifacts suffice as a "true" rookie card issue, choosing only "conventional sized" and or "mainstream" cards for their distinguished compilations. Regardless, it is general consensus among hobby experts that the E102 card is his first major Cobb "E" card ever manufactured via its assumed 1908 issue year, with the specific Candy Co. distributor still anonymous. We are now proud to offer one of the two finest E102 Cobb's on the planet, an extraordinary PSA EX/MT 6 that has been joined by only a single other example of the illustrious PSA "Pop" Chart with NONE graded higher! Indeed, synonymous with Cobb's elite standing, this miraculous offering has not been bested by a sole copy, proudly claiming the title as the finest of its kind. The incomparable "Georgia Peach" is still our National Pastime's leading lifetime batter (.366), and is widely recognized as one of baseball's greatest players to ever grace a diamond.

A 1936 Hall of Fame charter member, Cobb amassed an incredible 12 batting championships in 13 seasons including a staggering 9 consecutive titles from 1907-'15! Issued during the second season of Cobb's immortal batting title run, the uncanny batsman is depicted in a classic "leaning on bat" pose that is ultra-popular with advanced collectors (this image is also represented on the E92, E101, E106 and Rare "T" and Baking card issues such as the T214, T216 and D303 issues). Cobb's stoic image portrays brilliant gray hues and spectacular resolution, set against a sparkling blend of yellow/orange background tints. Atypical superb centering only reveals the slightest favoritism towards the left edge (approx. 45/55), with a majority of the remaining E102 and E101 Ty Cobb examples exhibiting skewed images. Four somewhat right-angled corners only depict peripheral wear consistent with the grade, and the surfaces are relatively clean with no creases evident to the naked eye. An outstanding flipside checklist is the final compliment for a card that has unquestionably been accurately assessed, emanating aesthetics arguably consistent with a near-mint subject. Whether you are building one of the finest E102 sets or collecting Ty Cobb's most significant cardboard heirlooms, this "best of the best" masterpiece sporting the highest PSA EX/MT 6 assessment stands as one of the "Georgia Peach's" most remarkable turn of the century keepsakes!
