(LOT 338)
Remarkable 1950 Doak Walker Autographed PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Laughead Studios "Rookie" Photo – Image Used for his 1951 Bowman #25 Subject - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" – Signed "Best Wishes – To Dick – Doak Walker" (PSA/DNA Authentication & Type 1 LOA)

This miraculous 1950 Doak Walker Type 1 "Rookie" photo used for his 1951 Bowman #25 subject has been actually signed by the former star running back/kicker, with the by-gone legend scripting in the upper left quadrant "Best Wishes - To Dick – Doak Walker" in what appears to be ball-point pen. Indeed, while finding any original "rookie era" photo of the popular halfback that was the basis for one of his mainstream Bowman cards is an excruciating task, locating that PSA Type 1 image with a Doak Walker autograph is virtually impossible. Although the script only depicts approximate 5/6 strength, it is its sheer existence that is the pertinent issue for it might be quite some time, if ever, that another one surfaces for the taking. Doak Walker's grid-iron legacy will surely outlast time, with the star halfback a member of both the Collegiate and Professional Football Hall of Fames. In 1948 he won the illustrious Heisman Trophy for his spectacular performance with Southern Methodist University and he played six seasons with the Detroit Lions, winning the rookie of the year in 1950, being part of five All-Pro teams and claiming two consecutive NFL Championships (1952/'53).

As the ultimate honor for this extremely well-respected superstar, in 1990, the Doak Walker Award was established in his name and has been awarded to the top collegiate running back every season since its inception. Likewise, his legacy will forever linger on courtesy of this extraordinary sepia toned 8" x 10" unique offering that sports a classic Walker running image with the period-style pigskin safely tucked under his right armpit and his classic #37 jersey facing the camera for all to see. While there are an abundance of scattered creases/wrinkles throughout the photo as well as obvious manual trims to the upper and right borders, the imposing central image and Doak Walker salutation "steals the show!" The verso includes the significant LAUGHEAD PHOTOGRAPHERS credit stamp near the lower edge, and while several areas of soiling exist, no obtrusive flaws are evident. A remarkable "one of a kind" keepsake from Walker's 1950 rookie campaign, its hallowed image used for his 1951 Bowman #25 subject coupled with the obscure Doak Walker autograph/salutation immediately establishes it as one of the gridiron's most formidable collectibles!
