(LOT 323)
1971 Pete Maravich Oversized 11" x 14" Rookie Photo - Includes PSA Type 1 LOA

Who could ever forget the flashy brilliance of "Pistol Pete" Maravich who dazzled the professional basketball world for a decade; averaging a sensational 24.2 points per game after posting an unfathomable 44.2 points per game average in his remarkable NCAA Division 1 tenure. A number 3 first round pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1970 amateur draft, his unparalleled and creative offensive skill-sets led iconic Hall of Famer John Havlicek to once quote: "Pete Maravich is the best ball-handler of all-time". It didn't take long for Maravich to place his indelible stamp on the NBA, averaging a sensational 23.2 points his 1970/'71 rookie campaign; ultimately ending his 11-year Hall of Fame career with nearly 16,000 points and an outstanding 24.2 points per game average. Sadly, his life was cut short when he tragically died at the tender young age of 40 during a 1988 basketball pick-up game due to a previously unknown heart defect. As a sheer testament to his enduring legacy, the following 11" x 14" PSA Type 1 oversized "ROOKIE" photo issued in 1971 rekindles fond memories of this basketball icon as he leaps in the air donning his classic Atlanta Hawks #44 jersey. Near-perfect contrast and resolution highlight this extreme rarity that reveals only a few negligible wrinkles and an approximate ½" diminutive tear near the upper right edge, with the verso reflecting the critical "BUFFALO EVENING NEWS/ROBERT L. SMITH" credit stamp. While "Pistol Pete" is unfortunately no longer with us, his sensational achievements will outlast eternity which is why we proudly invite you to capture one of his ultra-scarce and oversized Type 1 images issued during his inaugural 1971 campaign!
