(LOT 271)
1927 Herb Pennock PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Charles Conlon Photo - Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8"

Hall of Fame southpaw Herb Pennock pitched 22 MLB seasons, twirling 11 of those years with the New York Yankees from 1923-1933. One of his greatest seasons was the 1927 campaign where he was one of the mainstays of a formidable Yankees staff that ably assisted the New York club in literally "cakewalking" to a World Championship. Indeed, arguably considered the greatest team in baseball history, the '27 Yankees would post a sensational 110-44 regular season record and sweep the overmatched Pittsburgh Pirates in the Fall Classic. Pennock would contribute 19 victories that historic season, joining forces with Waite Hoyt, Wilcy Moore, George Pipgras, Urban Shocker, and Dutch Ruether to form one of the most formidable MLB pitching corps that legendary season. This outstanding 6-1/2" x 8" PSA Type 1 Pennock image was taken by none other than the iconic Charles M. Conlon, who along with Carl Horner and Paul Thompson is widely considered as the foremost baseball photographer. In typical Conlon fashion, the critical obverse side central image reveals near-perfect contrast and resolution as Pennock's pitching pose seemingly "come to life". The final thumbs up are the verso's "PENNOCK" and "Yankees" pencil notations scripted in Conlon's own hand. A stellar memento from that glorified 1927 campaign, it conjures up vivid memories of how that revered Yankees ballclub dominated our National Pastime at an incomparable level, led by the immortal Murderer's Row batting order and a remarkable pitching staff that just happened to include the great Herb Pennock!
