c. 1926 Chief Bender Charles Conlon Original Type I Photograph PSA/DNA Encapsulated & LOA

Charles Albert "Chief" Bender (D. 1954) was a pitcher during the first two decades of the 20th century. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. He played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1903-1914), Baltimore Terrapins (1915), Philadelphia Phillies (1916-1917), and Chicago White Sox (1925). Career Highlights include 3× league leader in winning percentage, 2× 20-game winner, 4 Sub-2.00 ERA seasons, pitched no-hitter in 1910, and a 3× World Series champion (1910, 1911, 1913) all with the Athletics. Bender was born in Crow Wing County, Minnesota as a member of the Ojibwa tribe. He, like other players of American Indian heritage, was given the nickname of "Chief", by which he is almost exclusively known today. Original 6.5" x 8.5" TYPE I photograph picturing Chief Bender in White Sox uniform in 1926 taken by Charles Conlon. This photo is the same image used for the 1991 Sporting News baseball card set picturing Bender as a White Sox coach in 1926. We've never seen this image offered in original format. Gelatin photograph. One of the best images of Bender ever captured on film! Photo has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA.
