(LOT 266)
Ultra-Scarce c.1917 Chick Gandil PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Charles Conlon Photo – Measures Approx. 7-1/2" x 9-1/2"

The White Sox player most responsible for the legendary 1919 "Black Sox" World Series "fix" was their flamboyant 1st baseman Chick Gandil. Nearing the end of his brilliant career, like many of his teammates, Gandil was totally frustrated by owner Charles Comiskey's penny pinching habits, and was looking for one final chance at hitting the jackpot on a baseball field. This prompted Gandil to meet with a Chicago gambler named Joseph "Sport" Sullivan, with Gandil proclaiming for the right amount of money he could convince a number of his teammates to "throw" the Series against Cincinnati. On September 21st, Gandil summoned seven teammates to his Ansonia Hotel room to propose the idea and the "fix" was now in! Along with Joe Jackson and Ed Cicotte, Chick Gandil remains one of the more prominent "Black Sox" players with his collectibles highly sought after by avid enthusiasts.

With that in mind, presented here is a magnificent 1917 PSA Type 1 Chick Gandil photo struck by none other than the immortal photographer Charles M. Conlon. Before the tragic Black-Sox scandal, Gandil would join forces with the likes of Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver and Ed Cicotte to lead the White Sox to their second world championship when they bested the N.Y. Giants four game to two in the 1917 World Series. Measuring approximately 7-1/2" x 9-1/2", Gandil's throwing image is absolutely breathtaking as he dins his classic 1917 White Sox uniform that included the super imposing "SOX" insignia with a series of elaborate stars embedded in the large "S". Near-perfect contrast and crystal-clear clarity steal the show, with the verso revealing the critical ''CHARLES M. CONLON" credit stamp as well as some additional pencil notations written in Conlon's hand ("Chick GANDIL – White Sox"). Considering its brilliant visual appeal as well as its photographer being the iconic Charles M. Conlon, this 1917 rendition of the by-gone star 1st baseman, it merits a final resting place in any esteemed photo compilation!
