(LOT 257)
c.1920's Casey Stengel PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Paul Thompson Photo – Measures Approx. 5" x 7"

Casey Stengel's 14-year playing career would include stints with five different teams, with the Hall of Fame right-fielder enjoying his two greatest seasons as a standout member of the New York Giants in 1922 and 1923. Stengel would bat an outstanding .368 and .369 those two campaigns, ably assisting John McGraw's club in besting their cross-town rival Yankees in the 1922 Fall Classic. This outstanding PSA Type 1 Stengel portrait photo was taken by the iconic photographer Paul Thompson most likely during that 1922 campaign, with the 5" x 7" well-centered masterpiece revealing breathtaking aesthetics. Stengel is donning his classic Giants pinstriped cap and uniform, revealing an extremely stoic facial expression for Thompson's lens, and the verso includes the critical PAUL THOMPSON credit stamp as well as a pencil scripted notation that reads: "Giants – 1922 – Stengel." Of course, while Stengel was a formidable player, he was ultimately elected to baseball's illustrious Hall of Fame in 1966 largely in part due to his uncanny managerial success with the New York Yankees from 1949-1960 in which he won 7 world championships, including a record 5 consecutive titles from 1949-1953! He was well respected and admired by virtually all his peers, and will forever be famous for his non-stop, rambling speeches called "Stengelese." It is for all these reasons that his mementos are widely sought after within the collecting community, and we cannot imagine a finer illustration than this imposing Thompson photo that originates from Stengel's finest season!
