1910 PC796 Sepia Postcard - Christy Mathewson (SGC EX 5) - "1 of 1" – Only One Graded Higher on the COMBINED SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts!
The PC 796 Sepia Postcards were produced by an unknown manufacturer in 1910, and included many of the game's top stars. One of those players happens to be the legendary New York Giants hurler Christy Mathewson, and it is his magnificent postcard presented here in an outstanding SGC EX 5 holder! The SOLE specimen at this extremely rare mid-grade tier, only a single example has been graded higher on the combined SGC and PSA census reports! What more can be said about the incomparable "Matty" that we already don't know. He is on many experts' lists as, arguably, the greatest pitcher who ever toed the rubber. His 373 wins still stands as the all-time National league mark (tied with Grover Alexander) and he won 30 games 3 consecutive seasons! He was famous for his virtually un-hittable fade away pitch (more commonly called the screwball) and, throughout his career, was noted for his pinpoint control.

It is his 1905 World Championship when the "Big Six" raised his game to a godly-like level. Pitching against Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's, Mathewson tossed 3 consecutive shutout World Series victories, 27 innings and ZERO RUNS, and never again will our National Pastime witness such a performance on its grandest stage. The offered card provides a splendid portrayal of Mathewson's classic pitching follow through that has retained most of its original luster and exceptional resolution. This highly desirable pitching pose is the EXACT same image affixed to Matty's Novelty Cutlery and Max Stein postcards, as well as the near impossible to find 1912 Plow's Candy for which there is only a single known example. The sepia-toned card exhibits fine "EX 5" aesthetics with no glaring surface flaws whatsoever, culminating with a super clean un-cancelled postcard verso. Extremely rare for the grade and only bested by a single SGC 5.5 specimen, its miraculous-like "top-pop" existence is synonymous with the Christian Gentlemen's uncanny pitching prowess that places him as one of baseball's all-time hurlers!
