(LOT 32)
Scarce 1897 Brooklyn Baseball Club Cameo Pepsin Gum Pin – Near-Mint+ Condition

While the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 7th place finish in the National League for the 1897 campaign via their 61-71 record was uneventful, their classic team picture presented on this near-immaculate 1897 Cameo Pepsin Gum celluloid will forever reside as a premier 19th century collectible among elite hobbyists. Miraculously retaining a majority of its original Whitehead & Hoag factory issued attributes, this grand offering has stubbornly defied 'father-time" over the past 123 years. It is no secret among elite enthusiasts that the pre-1900 Cameo Pepsin Gum celluloids are among the most coveted pins since they were the inaugural issued baseball pins, with team issued pinbacks a very obscure sub-set of the entire Cameo Pepsin Gum set. One of only seven different team pins issued, this sepia-toned Brooklyn Bridegrooms offering borders on near perfection, with its sparking image emanating the finest possible clarity and contrast imaginable.

Measuring approximately 1.25" in diameter, its circular rim is completely intact, the lower region reveals a bold "BROOKLYN B.B. CLUB" text, and the surface is extremely clean. Even more amazing is the pin's flipside advertisement that has incredibly eluded the typical wear depicted by most Cameo Pepsin Pins. All of the critical paper ad-back verbiage has remained in its virtual original state, including the following bold text: "MADE BY AMERICAN PEPSIN GUM CO., NEWARK, N.J. - CAMEO PEPSIN GUM – BUTTONS MADE BY WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. NEWARK, N.J.", with the original pin avoiding any serious oxidation flaws. A simply remarkable keepsake from the landmark Cameo Pepsin Gum pin set that has recently celebrated its 124th birthday, its pristine-like condition and unquestionable rarity places it as one of the most significant pinbacks in the collecting community!
