(LOT 172)
c.1941 Phil Rizzuto "Rookie Era" PSA Type 1 Encapsulated International News Photo – Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2"

This outstanding offering depicts the idolized Yankee HOF shortstop Phil Rizzuto in a classic leaping position, legs outstretched, during what we assume to be his 1941 rookie season. The reverse side caption clearly states that Yankee rookie Phil Rizzuto is being groomed for the shortstop position at their ST. Petersburgh, FL. spring training facility. Since Rizzuto's inaugural season was 1941, this image must have been taken during that spring training campaign, with Rizzuto eventually winning the shortstop job and ably assisting the Yankees winning their 9th world championship. Along with Derek Jeter, legendary shortstop Phil "The Scooter" Rizzuto remains one of the two greatest shortstops in New York Yankee history. While Jeter is a sure Hall of Famer, at this time, Rizzuto stands as the SOLE Yankee shortstop to ever be enshrined in Cooperstown, New York. His slick-fielding ability places him as one of baseball's finest fielding shortstops, and along with DiMaggio and Berra, he was one of the Yankee mainstays that led them to five consecutive championships from 1949 – 1953.

A lifetime .273 hitter, Rizzuto's greatest season was in 1950 when he batted a stellar .324, eventually claiming the American League MVP, something Derek Jeter never accomplished. A superb Phil Rizzuto collectible, it conjures up memories of his uncanny ability to scoop up ground balls and turn double plays in a manner seldom seen by most shortstops who ever played the game! The extremely well-centered image reveals breathtaking aesthetics via its magnificent contrast and clarity, and only a few negligible surface scratches/light wrinkles barely visible to the naked eye do not impede the awe-inspiring Scooter fielding pose. Measuring approximately 6-1/2" x 8-1/2", its final superlative is the aforementioned detailed caption that is affixed partly over the significant International News credit stamp. A superb Phil Rizzuto rookie-era collectible, it conjures up memories of his uncanny ability to scoop up ground balls and turn double plays in a manner seldom seen by most shortstops who ever graced the critical middle infielder position! – PSA Type 1 Encapsulation
