(LOT 165)
1937 Lou Gehrig Classic Batting Pose – PSA Type 1 Encapsulated New York Daily News Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10"

This exalted Gehrig batting photo was originally taken at Yankee Stadium on June 17, 1937 and portrays the "Iron Horse" completing his mighty swing. Taken by the Daily News, Gehrig has just singled in the bottom of second inning in a game that the Yankees would best the Cleveland Indians by a 9-7 score. Lou would finish the day with two singles and two walks in five plate appearances while scoring two runs. The 1937 campaign would ultimately be one of Gehrig's finest seasons as the slugging first sacker would clout 37 round-trippers, knock in 158 runs, post a .351 batting average and compile an amazing 1.116 OPS. That hitting performance would help the Yankees cruise to their 9th pennant, posting a 102-52 record and besting 2nd place Detroit by a staggering 13 games.

They would continue their onslaught by besting their cross-town Giants rivals in 5 games in the Fall Classic, posting their 2nd consecutive championship and 6th overall. Measuring approximately 8" x 10", Gehrig's imposing swinging pose can literally make an avid fan "skip a beat", with the brilliant resolution enhancing the classic image that includes the "Iron Horse", Indians catcher Frankie Pytlak and home plate umpire Steve Basil all watching the batted ball. No obtrusive surface flaws are evident, and the verso includes the standard Daily News caption that reflects the DATE (6/17/34); PHOTOGRAPHER (Froeber); SUBJECT (Yankees vs. Cleveland); LOCATION (Yankee Stadium); CAPTION (Gehrig at bat singles) and GENERAL REMARKS (2nd inning). One of the finest Gehrig batting images you will ever encounter, it stands as a vivid reminder of how the Yankee Captain wreaked havoc on American League hurlers for 14 seasons, standing tall alongside Babe Ruth and Ted Williams as one of baseball's greatest all-time hitters!
