(LOT 162)
1936 Yankees Team Picture w/Lou Gehrig & a Rookie Joe DiMaggio – PSA Type I Encapsulated George Burke Photo – Measures Approx. 4" x 6"

After the 1934 season, the "Babe" officially left the New York Yankees organization forever, with the Bronx Bombers now looking to replace baseball's greatest player. Incredibly, the 1936 season would see the Yankees call up their star centerfielder Joseph Paul DiMaggio and he would quickly join Yankee captain Lou Gehrig in leading the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 1932. Led by an astonishing 6 Cooperstown Inductees on the playing field (Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dickey, Ruffing, Lazzeri, and Gomez) as well as their Hall of Fame manager and coach, Joe McCarthy and Earl Combs, the Yankees would win 102 games, literally coasting to the American League pennant. The Fall Classic would then see the "Bronx Bombers" capture the first of four consecutive championships, besting the New York Giants in six games.

This spectacular 4" x 6" black & white 1936 team image was taken by none other than the legendary photographer George Burke, portraying Lou Gehrig standing in the middle row second from the left and the heralded rookie star "Joltin Joe" DiMaggio likewise in the middle row fifth from the left. The remaining 26 players/coaches/etc. (28 total) include notable Hall of Famers such as Lefty Gomez (directly next to DiMaggio); Earl Combs/coach (bottom row, 4th from the left); Joe McCarthy/manager (bottom row, 5th from the left), Tony Lazzeri (top row, far left); Bill Dickey (middle row, 4th from the right); and Red Ruffing (middle row, second from the right). All 28 names are listed undeath the illustration, the flipside includes the critical "GEO. BURKE" credit stamp and other than a few stray wrinkles along the perimeter, the 84-year old image has miraculously eluded any notable flaws. This would mark the first of four consecutive seasons in which the Yankees would capture baseball's World Championship, led by the incomparable dynamic duo of the Iron Horse and Yankee Clipper. Indeed, this classic team image truly resides as an outstanding depiction of the seemingly "unbeatable" Yankee squad that reads like a "who's who" for our National Pastime's illustrious Hall of Fame!
