(LOT 134)
1963 World Series - Sandy Koufax Pitches Against the N.Y. Yankees Clinching Game#4 at Dodger Stadium – PSA Type l Encapsulated Wide World Photos – Measures Approx. 7" x 9"

The 1963 Fall Classic would match the Los Angeles Dodgers against the mighty New York Yankees who were led by their iconic slugging centerfielder Mickey Mantle. The Yankees had claimed the 1962 World Championship and were looking to defend their title, while the Dodgers were trying to claim their inaugural championship for the city of Los Angeles. The old baseball slogan "good pitching stops good hitting" would reign supreme in this match with the Dodgers pitching staff totally dominating the Yankees hitters to the tune of only 4 runs in their amazing four-game sweep of the vaulted Yankee squad.

Spearheading the way for the Dodgers was their ace southpaw Sandy Koufax who claim the National League Pitching "Triple Crown" via his incredible 25-5 record, 306 strikeouts and microscopic-like 1.88 E.R.A! Winner of both the 1963 Cy Young Award and N.L. MVP, Koufax would now turn his attention to the Yankees and would certainly not disappoint his fan base. In game#1 at Yankee Stadium (Oct. 2, 1963), Koufax would strikeout a then record 15 batters in route to a 5-2 complete-game victory. After Podres and Drysdale likewise silenced the Yankee bats with dominating game 2 & 3 victories, HOF manager Walt Alston would send Koufax to the mound once again in game#4 in an attempt to clinch the series. The immortal Cooperstown Inductee did not disappoint Alston and the L.A. faithful, literally turning the Yankee bats to sawdust with his awe-inspiring 2-1 complete game victory over the great Whitey Ford, as the Dodgers swept the Yankees in four straight games.

This outstanding 7" x 9" illustration portrays the iconic lefty hurler pitching to an overmatched Yankee batter in that final game 4 at Dodger Stadium. Koufax has just released one of his blazing fastballs to a Yankee batter (which we cannot identify) with Johnny Roseboro behind the plate. The well-centered image is captivating to say the least, revealing no obtrusive surface flaws, brilliant clarity, and the classic WIDE WORLD PHOTOS credit stamp on the flipside. A stellar heirloom from the 1963 fall Classic, Koufax would ultimately be named World Series MVP, the final exclamation to one of the greatest seasons ever tallied by any MLB hurler! - PSA Type I Encapsulation
