(LOT 97)
1924 Walter Johnson Pitching - PSA Type I Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo – Measures Approx. 4-1/2" x 9"

Most historians agree that Walter Johnson resides as baseball's greatest all-time pitcher. The "Big Train" racked up a staggering 417 wins and 113 career shutouts to support that claim, with the "Weiser Wonder" beginning his MLB career in 1907 with the Washington Senators. Unfortunately for Johnson, aside from his seemingly infinite pitching records, entering the 1924 season, the one prize that had eluded him was a World Championship. Johnson ultimate dream would be realized by the end of the 1924 campaign when his Washington Senators captured the American League Pennant and bested John McGraw's Giants in a tightly- contested 7-game World Series.

Having lost games one and five, Johnson would make amends by entering game 7 in the ninth inning of a tied game, going on to pitch four scoreless innings and claiming the victory when Washington scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th on Earl McNeely's "bad-hop" grounder that skipped over the usual sure handed 3rd baseman Freddie Lindstrom into left field. As a testament to that renowned season, presented here is a spectacular PSA Type 1 Original Walter Johnson photo that portrays the iconic twirler unleashing one of his blistering fastballs on the sidelines during Washington's September pennant run.

Measuring approximately 4-1/2" x 9" the rather tall and imposing sepia-toned photo was issued by the famous Underwood & Underwood News Service, and reveals outstanding contrast and crystal-clear clarity. Obviously assisting the sharp perimeter is a previous manual trim, with the verso revealing a critical caption and the classic Underwood & Underwood credit stamp. Super clean, this significant "Big-Train" heirloom portrays the peerless Johnson during the season when he would finally ably assist the Senators in claiming a World Championship for our Nation's Capital! – PSA Type I Encapsulation
