(LOT 92)
1931 New York Yankees "Murderer's Row" w/Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri & Combs – PSA Type I Encapsulated International News Photo – Measures Approx. 6" x 10"

Arguably the most formidable grouping of hitters in any MLB lineup was the potent New York Yankees "Murderer's Row" that included the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, and Combs. These slugging legends led the Yanks to two consecutive World Championships in 1927 and 1928, with the "'Sultan of Swat" setting the stage with his record-breaking 60 homer season in 1927 The Yanks would win 8 consecutive World Series games over those two seasons, sweeping both the Pirates and Cardinals in one of the finest displays of superiority ever witnessed on a ballfield. Although this winning machine was put on hold for several years via the rise of Connie Mack's Athletics, entering the 1931 season, both the Yankee players and fans were extremely hopeful that they could once again capture the A.L. Pennant.

Presented here is a magnificent 6" x 10" black & white PSA Type I photo depicting the four aforementioned "Murderer's Row" legends including from left to right: Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzeri and Babe Ruth! Taken in front of the Yankee Stadium dugout during the 1931 opening series against the Boston Red Sox, the breathtaking image portrays the finest imaginable clarity and contrast, with all four players donning their classic Yankee home pinstripes while leaning on their mighty lumber. Other than a few scattered surface wrinkles (particularly near the lower right corner), we cannot detect any other noteworthy flaws, with the verso including the renowned International News Photos credit stamp as well as a significant caption dated 4-16-31 that mentions the four fearsome sluggers along with the following verbiage: "They may strike terror to the hearts of any pitcher they may face this season during the race for the Pennant".

Although the Yankees would sweep the Red Sox in three straight games at Yankee Stadium to open the 1931 campaign, the Athletics would eventually capture the '31 A.L. Pennant. Fortunately for New York fans, the following season these four Hall of Fame immortals would celebrate one more championship season, capturing the 1932 World Series title by sweeping the Chicago Cubs in four straight games. A bona-fide 89-year old artifact, it conjures up vivid memories for an era when the Yankees dominated our National Pastime at an unparalleled level via the exploits of the incomparable "Murderer's Row" sluggers! - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation
