(LOT 67)
"Fresh to the Hobby" 1955 Ashland/Aetna Oil College Basketball 6-Card Complete Strip incl. William Evans; Gayle Rose; Jeffrey Brock; Coach Paul McBrayer; Leonard Carpenter; Donald Whitehouse

Presented here is a complete 6-card 1955 Ashland/Aetna Oil College Basketball vertical strip including the original factory issued 6 un-cut subjects from the Kentucky-based Wildcats, Eastern Maroons, and Morehead Eagles. Players include guard William Evans (Wildcats); guard Gayle Rose (Wildcats); forward Jeffrey Brock (Maroons); coach Paul McBrayer (Maroons); guard Leonard Carpenter (Morehead Eagles) and guard Donald Whitehouse (Morehead Eagles). The top header includes the standard "hole-punch" utilized for purposes of hanging the 6-card strips on a gas station rack. This 6-card panel includes 2 players from 3-different Kentucky-based schools, with the header caption reflecting "KY. – EASTERN – MOREHEAD NO. 1" text (the "NO. 1 denotes the KY; EASTERN & MOREHEAD schools).

Other than the aforementioned standard hole punch, the remainder of the strip is absolutely breathtaking, portraying near-immaculate aesthetics including 6 crystal-clear portrait images, razor sharp edging, and super clean surfaces. Each subject's classic Ashland Oil ad-back depicts the player's vital statistics, graduation class and hometown, and of interesting note, Kentucky Wildcats guard William Evans just happened to be a member of the highly celebrated USA 1956 Olympic Gold Metal Basketball team. An extremely scarce cardboard marvel and "fresh to the hobby", along with the other un-cut strips in this auction it resides as the first un-cut strip we have ever encountered, meriting the highest hobby accolades for any advanced "type card" collector!
