(LOT 690)
1929 U.S. Open – Bobby Jones Type 1 Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I Encapsulation

In 1929, Bobby Jones would win his 3rd U.S. Open Golf Championship, besting runner-up Al Espinosa by a record 23 strokes in a 36-hole playoff. This would be the inaugural U.S. Open hosted by the Winged Foot Country club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., with the tournament running from June 27th thru June 30th. The offered image portrays the iconic Bobby Jones hitting a chip-shot from a sand trap/bunker in the first round in which he shot a stellar 69, eventually moving on to capture the renowned U.S. Open title after four days of a heart-wrenching contest. The image itself exhibits spectacular contrast and clarity, with a lower left corner chip the only noteworthy flaw.

The verso includes the standard Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as a critical caption reflecting the details of this major event. Regarding Jones' immense stature, this was one of his amazing 13 Major Championships that places him only behind Tiger Woods (15) and the legendary all-time leader Jack Nicklaus (18). A charter member of Golf's illustrious Hall of Fame (1974), he proudly stands as one of the greatest players to ever swing a golf club, with this extremely eclectic action shot from one of his victorious U.S. Opens worthy of any world-class compilation!
