(LOT 648)
1925 Walter Johnson Signs a Baseball at Forbes Field During the 1925 World Series – Underwood & Underwood Type 1 Photo - Measures Approx. 7" x 9-1/2" – PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

Fresh off of his first and only World Championship, Walter Johnson would once again lead his Senators to another A.L. Pennant in 1925, facing off against the Pirates in the1925 Fall Classic. Unfortunately for both Washington and Johnson, this World Series would not turn out as favorable as the prior year's remarkable victory, with the Pirates besting Washington in a tightly contested 7-game battle. The "Big-Train" would win games 1 and 4, totally dominating Pittsburgh's overmatched hitters. In game 7, however, Johnson was clinging to a 6-4 lead entering the 7th inning until two key errors by typically sure-handed shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh in the 7th and 8th innings led to four unearned runs and a heart-wrenching loss to Pittsburgh.

This magnificent 7" x 9-1/2" Underwood & Underwood Type I image portrays Johnson signing a baseball for a fortunate admirer before one of the World Series games played at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field. Absolutely impeccable clarity and contrast elevate this borderless illustration to world-class stature, as Johnson dons his period-style Washington sweater. Under close inspection, only a few stray microscopic-light scratches are evident for this truly candid offering, with the verso revealing several Underwood & Underwood credit stamps and a small caption that reads as follows: "Walter Johnson, pitching ace; is shown at Forbes Field autographing one of the many balls coveted by the fans". It is no secret that Walter Johnson is heralded as the greatest pitcher in baseball history, justified by his 417 victories, 3,508 strikeouts and incredible 110 shutouts, with 38 of them resulting in a 1-0 score! His classic pitching photos are highly coveted in the market with only a handful of them possibly boasting the prestige and aesthetics as this "awe-inspiring" candid memento!
