(LOT 636)
1937 World Series Lou Gehrig Classic Batting Pose – Underwood & Underwood Type 1 Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This exalted Gehrig batting photo was taken at Yankee Stadium during game#1 of the 1937 World Series, and portrays the "Iron Horse" completing his mighty swing. Led by Gehrig's 37 round-trippers, 158 R.B.I.'s, .351 batting average and amazing 1.116 OPS, the 1937 Yankees would cruise to their 9th pennant, posting a 102-52 record and besting 2nd place Detroit by a staggering 13 games. They would continue their onslaught by besting their cross-town Giants rivals in 5 games in the Fall Classic, posting their 2nd consecutive championship and 6th overall. The 1937 Fall Classic would see a rematch of the 1936 Series, with the mighty New York Yankees once again matching up against their cross-river rival New York Giants. The Yankees would continue their dominance over their cross-town opponents by besting the Giant's in a short five-game series.

The opening game would be played at Yankee Stadium with Giant's ace lefthander Carl Hubbell clinging to a 1-0 lead over Yankees southpaw Lefty Gomez through four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Joe DiMaggio would plate two runs with a clutch single, and the Yankees would move on to best Hubbell by an 8-1 score. Although Lou would go hitless in game one, he did walk several times and score a run to assist in the Yankees victory. Measuring approximately 8" x 10", his imposing swinging pose can literally make an avid fan "skip a beat", with the somewhat dark contrasted image providing a spine-tingling Yankee Stadium backdrop that includes the classic World Series red, white and blue bunting.

The central image is absolutely breathtaking and you can virtually feel Gehrig's unparalleled strength as he smacks another horsehide sphere. The only condition-related issues worthy of mention is a lower left corner chip, some negligible surface damage along the lower border and a few stray wrinkles. The final exclamation point is a verso that includes both the Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as a critical Oct 7th, '37 caption providing details of the game#1 outcome. One of the finest Gehrig batting images you will ever encounter, its coupled Yankee Stadium backdrop and Fall Classic provenance place it as a world-class keepsake for any revered photo compilation!
