(LOT 635)
Superb c.1920's Babe Ruth Batting Pose – Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

The Red Sox will forever feel the pain of selling a young and flamboyant southpaw to the New York Yankees before the start of the 1920 baseball season, sold to the Yankees by Harry Frazee to fund his "No, No, Nanette" theatre production. Babe Ruth's new home was now the New York Polo Grounds (Yankee Stadium wasn't open until 1923), and he didn't disappoint his new fan base, slugging an unheard of 54 in his inaugural Yankee season. Only just beginning his onslaught of ballpark's fences, Ruth would break his own record the following season, clouting a remarkable 59 round trippers in 1921 while leading the Yankees to the American League pennant.

Incredible as it may seem, the 'Sultan of Swat" was out-homering virtually every Major League ball club, and it comes as little surprise that artifacts from Ruth's early Yankee playing days are few and far between. This justifies why this outstanding PSA Type I batting photo is an extraordinary link to Ruth's Yankee origin. Measuring approximately 6-1/2" x 8-1/2", this iconic image resides as a pre-1923 heirloom with the obvious Polo Grounds backdrop coupled with the "Babe" donning his home Yankee pinstripes substantiating that this batting practice photo was taken before the 1923 opening of Yankee Stadium. In the early 1920's, little did Ruth realize he was embarking on a career that would place him at the top of virtually every historians list as the greatest player to ever grace a ball field. Ruth's mighty swinging pose is one of the finest we have ever encountered on a period illustration, exhibiting spectacular contrast and crystal-clear clarity.

The only noteworthy surface flaw is a modest surface blemish situated on Ruth's left stocking, with the well-centered image defying nearly a century of potential wear. The blank back does not reveal any photographer/news service stamp, but only a few light pencil notations reading "Babe Ruth – Yankees". One of the truly magnificent early 1920's Ruth batting photos you will ever encounter, it serves as a steadfast reminder of the "Bambino's" unparalleled dominance of America's undisputed pastime as well as effectively transcending time to Ruth's early Yankee playing days!
