(LOT 630)
1939 Champs! - Yankees Opening Day at Yankee Stadium Type 1 Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I Encapsulation

The 1939 season would see the legendary New York Yankees win their fourth consecutive World Championship as they posted 106 wins, finishing 17 games ahead of their rival Boston red Sox and then sweeping the overmatched Cincinnati Reds in the Fall Classic. This spectacular 8" x 10" photo provides an awe-inspiring look at the Yankees assembled in their Yankee Stadium dugout before the start of their April 20, 1939 Opening Day game against the Red Six at Yankee Stadium. 30,000+ fans would attend the game and see Hall of Fame twirler Red Ruffing post a 7-hit shutout, with the Yankees besting Boston by a 2-0 score. Interestingly enough, immortal first sacker Lou Gehrig would begin his horrific deterioration from ALCS by going hitless in four at-bats. Less than two weeks later, the "Iron Horse" would pull himself out of the line-up in Detroit, ending his remarkable 2,130 consecutive game streak.

Gehrig would eventually deliver his iconic "luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech on July 4th, with a packed house of nearly 60,000 "choked-up" fans on hand to witness this momentous event. The photo itself is absolutely breathtaking, portraying world-class contrast and resolution and no noteworthy blemishes. The well-centered image reveals virtually all of the Bronx Bombers finest stars including DiMaggio, Dickey and Gehrig. The verso includes the significant Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as a small written note that reads: "Yanks in the dugout at Yankee Stadium before its opening game between the Boston red Sox and the N.Y. Yankees – April 20, '39".
Indeed, the 1939 Yankees season will forever stand as one of their most memorable campaigns, and this seldom surfacing heirloom is a perfect reminder of their pinnacle place among all baseball franchises as well as the unparalleled sentiment that would follow their falling hero henry Louis Gehrig!
